What to Eat Before A Workout

The food you eat prior to exercising plays a large role in the quality of workout you’ll receive. By eating the correct food before you hit the gym, you’ll increase your stamina, boost your performance, and even lower your risk for injuries. You need to ensure you consume quality carbs, lean protein, heart-healthy fats, and remain hydrated prior to working out because your muscles depend on protein in order for your red blood cells to bring nutrients and oxygen to your muscles. Without this, you risk decreased performance and muscle injuries, especially with intense fitness routines.

Although many people don’t like eating before working out, it’s important to do so, even if it’s just a light meal. If you’re only going for a brisk walk in the morning, you can get away with just drinking some water before you head out. But, if you’re going to be exercising vigorously, you don’t want to go out on an empty stomach.

Before you hit the gym, have a light meal of pasta, rice, or fruit to provide your body with the energy it needs. You can also eat breads, cereals, and vegetables for a quick boost of energy. No matter what you choose to eat, try to include something that is low in fat and fiber, but contains a moderate intake of carbs and proteins. Be sure to drink up to help stay hydrated during your workout.

If you plan to have a very intense workout, eat a banana, bagel, toast, or grits to provide your body with the fuel it needs. It doesn’t hurt to take one of these along with you as a snack for after your workout. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to help keep your body conditioned and performing as best as possible.

By keeping your body fully fueled before exercising, you’ll notice a huge increase in your stamina, producing the physical results you want faster.
